The Deal with Southern Cooking

Great food and good preparations make what people know as southern cooking. There are a lot of different countries that have influenced what we now classify as southern cooking from America to France to Spain. When it comes to this kind of cooking, there are several varieties including Cajun and Floribbean.

Culture is part of everything in most areas of the south including food especially in places like Maryland, Ohio River, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma. Bread and chicken are staples in southerners' regular meals and collard greens plus grits add to the whole experience. Usually, a pie is served during dessert if the person can still eat. When it comes to good old American soups like lentil or split pea, these are actually southern style soups.

To be more specific, for their pie, southerners love pecan, pumpkin or apple, while the preferred vegetables are green beans, squash or okra. Garden salads or fruit salads are eaten by southerners regularly and when it comes to breads, rolls and biscuits are conventional. Food is enjoyed to a whole other level if the table has been set properly and this is why the table is very important to southern folk.

Cornbread is a staple. There is always hot bread in a southerner's oven because the people in the south simply love corn bread. If there are no biscuits, corn bread, or rolls, you are not eating a southern meal.

As an example of Southern cooking, cornbread is prepared using self-rising flour with the added ingredients of baking soda, baking powder and salt. After mixing these powdery substances, you have to add in some milk, eggs, and shortening. It is up to you if sugar will be added.

You will need about a cup and a half of flour to start you off then you have to combine this with some milk, eggs, and shortening. Remember to combine all elements for a great dough. Use muffin tins that have been greased when you bake the bread.

For corn bread or biscuits, they are always hot when served. When it comes to this, the oven is set at a high temperature. Before the corn bread is cooked, the skillet is sprinkled with cornmeal and every now and then, the bread is turned in the pan.
